Hand Study

Hands are tough to draw if you haven't done it a lot. One of the great disciplines for an artist is to fill his or her sketchpad with lots of hands, feet, and faces. Draw them from real life, from reference photos, from other artists' drawings; just get them down.

In this particular sketchpad, I was going for 50 separate drawings of each. This page was hand-intensive. I think 50 of each in a month or so is a solid start in mastering them. The best thing is never to stop drawing them. It's exercise for your drawing "muscles," that hand-eye thing that learns to draw what it actually sees, not the symbols you're used to using ("Oh, there's a hand; I know how to draw that . . .").
